— The hotel
La Bastide de l’Oliveraie
So here’s the thing about La Bastide de l’Oliveraie – it’s tucked away in this quiet residential pocket called La Californie that honestly, most tourists never even know exists. You’re about ten minutes up the hill from all the Croisette madness, which means you get the best of both worlds. I mean, you can still hear the distant hum of Cannes below, but up here on allée des Oliviers, it’s actually peaceful. The hotel sits in this converted Provençal villa surrounded by – you guessed it – olive trees, and when you first pull up, it feels more like you’re visiting someone’s elegant aunt than checking into a hotel.
The whole place has this effortless French charm that you can’t fake. Walking through the entrance, there’s this lovely courtyard where they serve breakfast (and honestly, sitting there with your café au lait while the morning light filters through the olive branches is pretty magical). The rooms vary quite a bit – some have these gorgeous terraces that look out toward the Mediterranean, others are more intimate and face the garden. What I really appreciated was the attention to detail without all the fussy over-decoration you sometimes get at boutique places. Simple linen curtains, good lighting, bathrooms that actually have counter space for your stuff. The air conditioning works properly too, which – trust me – matters in July and August.
You know what sets this place apart though? The staff actually knows the area. When I asked about dinner recommendations, they didn’t just hand me a generic list of tourist traps. They suggested this little bistro down in Le Suquet that I never would’ve found otherwise, and mentioned which beaches are less crowded if you head east toward Antibes. Parking can be a bit tight (it’s France, after all), but they have a small lot and the neighborhood streets aren’t too bad if you need to find a spot. The walk down to Cannes proper takes about twenty minutes, or there’s a bus that runs pretty regularly – though honestly, after a day of festival crowds or beach time, coming back up the hill to this quiet sanctuary feels like the perfect escape. With a 9.1 rating, it’s clearly not just me who thinks they’ve got something special going on here.
