— The hotel
Monroe’s studio at the heart of Cannes and beaches
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first climbed up to Monroe’s studio on Rue Rouguière – I mean, it’s literally just a door marked “1” on the first floor of this typical Cannes building. But honestly, sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you from the outside. The location hit me first – you’re basically in the thick of everything here. Walk two minutes toward the Palais des Festivals and you’ll bump into all those red carpet spots you see on TV, but turn the other direction and you’re at Plage du Midi before you can finish your morning coffee. The narrow streets around here get pretty lively during festival season (fair warning if you’re a light sleeper), but that energy is exactly what makes staying in this part of Cannes worth it.
The studio itself feels more like crashing at a friend’s place than staying in some sterile hotel room – which is actually refreshing after dealing with all those cookie-cutter chain places. It’s got that lived-in charm where everything works but nothing’s trying to be Instagram-perfect, you know? The 8.6 rating makes sense once you settle in because it’s the little things that add up: decent WiFi that doesn’t cut out when you need it most, a kitchen setup that’s actually functional if you want to grab groceries from the Monoprix down the street instead of eating out every meal, and windows that open wide enough to let in those Mediterranean breezes. I’ll be honest – parking around here can be a bit of a nightmare, especially in summer when everyone and their cousin descends on Cannes. But that’s true for pretty much anywhere in the city center, and at least you can walk everywhere from Rue Rouguière.
What really sold me on this place was how it sits right in that sweet spot between the bougie Croisette scene and the more authentic Cannes that locals actually live in. You can stumble back from a late dinner at one of those fancy restaurants near the old port, or grab a simple sandwich from the boulangerie that opens ridiculously early (seriously, like 6 AM) just around the corner. The beach situation is honestly perfect – Plage du Midi doesn’t have the crazy crowds of the main Croisette beaches, but you’re still close enough to people-watch at the Martinez or wherever if that’s your thing. For a three-star spot, Monroe’s delivers on what matters most: a real sense of place and the freedom to experience Cannes like you actually belong here, not just like another tourist checking boxes.
