— The hotel
Residence Buttura
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Residence Buttura – it’s tucked away on this quiet little street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t specifically looking for it. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. While everyone else is dealing with the chaos around the Palais des Festivals or fighting for space near the Croisette, you’re on Rue Buttura where the locals still outnumber the tourists and you can actually hear yourself think.
The place feels more like staying at a sophisticated friend’s apartment than a typical hotel, which I mean in the best possible way. The rooms have this effortless French elegance – not the stuffy kind you sometimes get in older properties, but something that feels lived-in and authentic. I particularly loved how they’ve managed to blend modern comforts with those classic Cannes details (the shutters, the way the light filters in during late afternoon). The 9.4 rating makes total sense once you’re there because it’s all those little things – the way the staff actually remembers your name, how the coffee in the morning tastes like it came from that excellent little roastery down near the port, the fact that your neighbors aren’t stumbling in drunk from the casino at 3 AM.
Location-wise, you’re basically in the sweet spot. Five minutes to the beach if you walk at a normal pace, maybe seven if you’re the type who stops to look at everything. You can hit Forville Market in the morning for those incredible tomatoes and cheese (seriously, go early before the cruise ship people arrive), then wander over to the old town without breaking a sweat. Parking can be tricky in this part of Cannes – well, parking’s tricky everywhere in Cannes during festival season – but they’ll point you toward the municipal lots that won’t cost you a fortune. The neighborhood gets this lovely quiet buzz in the evenings when people are heading out for dinner, but it’s not the kind of place where you’ll get woken up by street noise. I actually found myself opening the windows most nights, which says something about both the area and the soundproofing. If you’re the type who likes to feel like you’re experiencing the real Cannes rather than just visiting it, this is your spot. It’s got that four-star polish without feeling corporate or impersonal – more like someone who really knows hospitality decided to create exactly the kind of place they’d want to stay.
