— The hotel
Toits du vieux port
So I stumbled across Toits du vieux port during a May trip to Cannes, and honestly? The name pretty much tells you everything you need to know – you’re literally looking out over the rooftops of the old port area. The hotel sits on Boulevard de la Ferrage, which is this perfect sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to the Palais des Festivals in about eight minutes (I timed it), but far enough from the Croisette madness that you can actually get some sleep.
The building itself has that classic French Riviera thing going on – you know, cream-colored facade with those blue shutters that somehow never look cheesy here like they might elsewhere. What really got me was stepping into the lobby and immediately smelling that mix of fresh flowers and coffee that seems to happen naturally in well-run French hotels. The staff actually remembers your name after day two, which is refreshing when you’re used to big chain places. My room faced the port (definitely worth requesting), and I’d find myself just standing at the window in the mornings watching the fishing boats head out while the yachts were still sleeping – there’s something almost meditative about it. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully updated, meaning they kept the character but added things like proper USB outlets and a shower that doesn’t require an engineering degree to operate.
Here’s what I really appreciated – the location lets you live like someone who actually knows Cannes instead of just being another tourist. You’re a two-minute walk from Rue Meynadier, which is where locals do their grocery shopping and where you’ll find that little bakery with the incredible pain aux raisins (trust me on this one). The old port area gets lively in the evenings but settles down by around midnight, so you get the energy without the all-night party noise. Parking is typical Cannes nightmare stuff, but the hotel can sort you out with a spot at a nearby garage – it’s not cheap, but honestly, nothing is during festival season. I was there just after the film festival crowds cleared out, and the 8.5 rating it gets makes total sense. It’s not trying to be the flashiest place on the coast, but it nails all the things that actually matter when you’re exploring a city like this. You wake up feeling like you’re staying in a real neighborhood rather than some tourist bubble, and that’s worth a lot more than marble bathrooms and branded bathrobes.
Visitors often choose Cannes apartments over traditional hotels because they provide more space, kitchen facilities, and the opportunity to live like a local in this magnificent French Riviera destination.
