— The hotel
Travel lodge
Honestly, when I first walked up to the Travel Lodge on Rue Macé, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s tucked into this narrow street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t looking for it. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly what made it perfect. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Palais des Festivals (where all the Cannes Film Festival magic happens), but because it’s on this quieter side street, you don’t get the constant buzz of tourists and traffic that hammers the hotels right on La Croisette.
The building itself has that classic French charm – sort of weathered in a good way, with shutters that actually look like they belong there rather than some designer’s idea of “European flair.” What really got me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the neighborhood. The guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map; he actually drew little marks showing me which boulangerie opens earliest (crucial for fresh croissants before the crowds hit), and which route to take to avoid the morning delivery trucks on Rue d’Antibes. The rooms are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but the beds are surprisingly good, and there’s decent water pressure, which honestly matters more than marble countertops when you’ve been walking around Cannes all day. I stayed during the shoulder season in late September, and it was blissfully quiet at night, though I imagine it gets livelier during festival season.
What struck me most was how this place feels authentically Cannes without trying too hard. You can walk to the famous beaches in about eight minutes, but you can also wander the other direction toward the old town (Le Suquet) and feel like you’re discovering something. There’s a little café right around the corner – Café de la Paix – where locals actually go for their morning coffee, not just tourists Instagram-ing their cappuccinos. The location means you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the chaos to actually sleep. And parking – well, it’s Cannes, so parking is always a nightmare, but at least from here you can walk everywhere instead of driving in circles looking for a spot that costs more than your dinner.
