There’s this fantastic little épicerie just two blocks down that saved me multiple times when I needed decent wine without paying hotel markup. The beach access is legit too – you can hit the public stretches or, if you’re feeling fancy, some of the private beach clubs are a short stroll away. What I loved most was how you could escape back to Avenue Windsor when the festival crowds got overwhelming (and trust me, they will).

The hotel itself feels more like staying at someone’s well-appointed guesthouse than a standard chain property. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no pretentious attitude you sometimes get in this town. The rooms aren’t massive, but they’re thoughtfully laid out with decent air conditioning (crucial in summer) and windows that actually open, which sounds minor until you’ve been trapped in a sealed hotel box for three days. Parking can be a bit tricky during peak season – there’s street parking, but you might want to ask about their arrangements because the Old Port area fills up fast during any major event.

I mean, the 10 rating might seem high for a 3-star place, but it makes sense when you consider what you’re getting for the price point in Cannes. This isn’t the Martinez, obviously, but you’re not paying Martinez prices either. What you get is a clean, comfortable base in a neighborhood that feels authentically French, run by people who seem to actually care about whether you have a good stay. The breakfast (when I bothered with it) was simple but fresh, and the staff gave solid local recommendations – not the usual “go to the touristy restaurant that gives us kickbacks” nonsense.

Honestly, if you’re the type who needs to Instagram every corner of your hotel room, this might not be your spot. But if you want somewhere genuine to crash while you explore Cannes properly – somewhere you can walk to the Palais for business, hit the real beaches for pleasure, and grab groceries like a normal person – Hakuna Matata delivers exactly what its name promises. No worries, no fuss, just a solid home base in one of the world’s most beautifully chaotic cities.
