— The hotel
Hôtel Ligure
You know what? Hôtel Ligure isn’t going to blow you away with Instagram-worthy lobby shots, but honestly, that’s kind of the point. This little three-star sits right on Place de la Gare – literally facing the train station – which sounds terrible until you realize it’s actually brilliant. I mean, you step off the train from Nice or wherever, and boom, you’re already checking in. No dragging luggage through cobblestone streets or hunting for your hotel with a dead phone battery.
The location is what really makes this place work. Sure, you’ll hear some train noise, but it’s not like you’re here to sleep in anyway, right? You’re a five-minute walk from La Croisette and all those fancy beach clubs, but you’re paying about half what you’d shell out for a seafront room. The staff actually seems to care – they’ll give you proper directions to avoid the tourist traps on Rue d’Antibes and point you toward where locals grab coffee. The rooms are… well, they’re European three-star rooms. Clean, compact, decent shower pressure. Nothing fancy, but the air conditioning works (crucial in July), and the WiFi doesn’t cut out every ten minutes like some places I’ve stayed around here.
What I really appreciate is how it feels authentically Cannes without trying too hard. The building has that slightly worn French charm – you know, the kind where the elevator is tiny but has character, and the breakfast room overlooks a little square where you can watch the morning hustle. Speaking of breakfast, it’s simple but solid. Fresh croissants, decent coffee, nothing revolutionary but it gets you going. The whole vibe is refreshingly unpretentious in a city that can feel pretty show-offy. You’re not going to run into movie stars in the lobby during festival season, but you will meet actual travelers who chose substance over flash. Plus, and this matters more than you’d think, there’s a Monoprix basically next door for grabbing snacks, sunscreen, or whatever you forgot to pack. The 7.4 rating feels about right – it’s not going to be anyone’s dream hotel, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any nasty surprises.
