— The hotel
Hotel Schtak
You know what’s funny about Hotel Schtak? I walked past it three times before realizing this unassuming building on Rue d’Antibes was actually my hotel. It’s one of those classic Cannes properties that doesn’t scream for attention – which, honestly, turned out to be exactly what I needed after dealing with the chaos of festival season crowds just a few blocks away.
The location is actually pretty brilliant once you get your bearings. You’re right in the thick of things on one of Cannes’ main shopping streets, but it’s far enough from the Croisette that you’re not paying those insane beachfront prices. I mean, you can walk to the Palais des Festivals in maybe eight minutes, and there’s this great little boulangerie called Maison Julien literally around the corner where I grabbed croissants every morning. The staff there started recognizing me by day three – that’s when you know you’ve found a good spot. What surprised me was how quiet the rooms actually were, considering you’re on a pretty busy street. I was expecting traffic noise all night, but the windows do a decent job of blocking it out.
The hotel itself feels properly French in that slightly worn, comfortable way – not Instagram-perfect, but real. My room was small (this is Cannes, everything’s small unless you’re dropping serious cash), but it had everything I actually needed. The shower had good pressure, which you can’t take for granted in older European hotels, and the bed was genuinely comfortable. The front desk staff spoke excellent English, though they seemed genuinely pleased when I attempted my terrible French. There’s no fancy lobby to speak of, just a simple reception area, but honestly that kept things efficient. Check-in took about two minutes, and they had solid recommendations for dinner spots that weren’t tourist traps.
I stayed there in September when things were calming down from summer madness, and the whole area felt more livable then – you could actually get a table at the outdoor cafés without booking days ahead. The hotel’s 7.7 rating feels about right to me. It’s not going to blow you away with luxury amenities or knockout views, but it delivers exactly what it promises: a clean, comfortable base in central Cannes without the premium you’d pay closer to the beach. If you’re the type who spends most of your time exploring rather than lounging in your room, and you want to be walking distance from both the glitzy Croisette scene and the more authentic neighborhoods up the hill, this place makes a lot of sense. Just don’t expect them to hold your hand – it’s refreshingly no-nonsense in the best possible way.
