— The hotel
Khayat
Honestly, when I first walked up to the Khayat on Croisette, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place on Cannes’ most famous strip. I mean, you’re literally 45 steps from where all those red carpet photos happen during the film festival, so I figured it’d either be overpriced tourist bait or… well, overpriced tourist bait. But you know what? This little place actually gets it right in ways that surprised me.
The thing about staying right on la Croisette is that most hotels either charge you a fortune for the address or stick you in a shoebox room with paper-thin walls. The Khayat sort of splits the difference – it’s not fancy, but the rooms are bigger than you’d expect and surprisingly quiet considering you’re above all that Croisette action. I stayed there in July (yeah, I know, tourist season) and could barely hear the street noise with the windows closed. The air conditioning actually works too, which honestly isn’t a given in some of these older Cannes properties. What really won me over was how the staff just… knew stuff. Like when I asked about getting to the Marché Forville market, the guy at reception didn’t just point me in the right direction – he told me which vendors have the best olives and warned me that parking near there is impossible after 9 AM. That’s local knowledge you can’t fake.
Here’s the thing about location though – and this is something you only figure out after walking around Cannes for a few days – being right on la Croisette means you’re in the thick of everything, but it also means you’re paying Croisette prices for your morning coffee. There’s this little café about two blocks inland (toward rue d’Antibes) where locals actually go, and the same espresso costs half as much. The Khayat sits in that sweet spot where you can stumble back from the Palais des Festivals in five minutes, but you’re also close enough to duck into the real Cannes when you want to escape the tourist bubble. I actually found myself using it as a base camp – pop back for a quick shower between beach time and dinner, grab forgotten sunglasses, that sort of thing. The 8.2 rating makes sense when you think about it that way. It’s not trying to be the Carlton or the Martinez with their marble lobbies and €40 cocktails. Instead, it’s doing the practical stuff really well: decent beds, good showers, staff who care, and a location that lets you experience Cannes without blowing your entire budget on the hotel room. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
