— The hotel
Velapop
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Velapop when I first pulled up to Vélasquez street – honestly, the name alone had me scratching my head. But this little 3-star spot near Pointe Croisette turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the cruise ship crowds haven’t ruined yet.
The location is actually pretty clever if you think about it. You’re close enough to the Croisette that you can walk to all the glitzy stuff (maybe 10 minutes to the Palais des Festivals), but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the insane crowds and noise that come with staying right on the famous strip. I mean, during the film festival this probably gets crazy too, but in regular season it felt refreshingly normal. The street itself is quiet – I could actually sleep with the windows open, which is saying something for Cannes. There’s a decent little café around the corner where locals grab their morning coffee, and you’ll pass a proper boulangerie on your way to the beach, which honestly matters more than any hotel breakfast buffet.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about the place. Check-in was smooth, no pretentious attitude, and when I mentioned I was looking for a good spot for dinner away from the tourist traps, the guy at reception actually drew me a little map to this family-run place in Le Suquet (the old town). That’s the kind of local knowledge you just can’t fake. The rooms aren’t going to win any design awards – this isn’t the Martinez or the Carlton – but everything works, it’s clean, and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that doesn’t try to be something it’s not. The shower had proper water pressure, the AC kept things comfortable during those sticky August nights, and honestly, after spending days walking around the city, I just wanted a comfortable bed and some peace. Velapop delivered on both counts. The whole place has this unpretentious vibe that I found pretty appealing, especially in a town where everyone’s usually trying to out-fancy each other. Plus, and this is important if you’re driving, there’s actually parking available – not always guaranteed in this part of town. For a 3-star that consistently gets solid ratings, it makes sense. Sometimes you just want a good night’s sleep and a base for exploring, without the drama or the price tag of the palace hotels down the road.
