— The hotel
Villa Riviera
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Villa Riviera on Avenue Isola Bella – it’s tucked into this residential part of La Californie that feels refreshingly removed from the madness of central Cannes, but you know what? That turned out to be exactly what made it special. The area has this old-money Riviera vibe where you’ll see locals walking their dogs past Belle Époque villas, and Villa Riviera fits right into that scene without trying too hard. It’s about a 15-minute walk down to the Croisette if you’re feeling energetic (though it’s uphill on the way back – fair warning), or there’s actually decent bus connections if you’re not in the mood to huff it.
What really got me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the neighborhood – not just the tourist spots everyone mentions, but like, which bakery opens earliest for your morning croissant run, or where to catch the best sunset views without fighting crowds. The rooms have this understated elegance that feels more “sophisticated aunt’s house” than “corporate hotel chain,” if that makes sense. Mine had French doors that opened onto a small balcony, and while it wasn’t some dramatic sea view, you could glimpse the Mediterranean between the palm trees, which was honestly perfect for morning coffee. The beds are properly comfortable too – I mean, sometimes these boutique places sacrifice comfort for style, but they got the balance right here.
I’ll be straight with you though – if you’re the type who needs to be in the thick of everything until 3 AM, this might feel a bit quiet. But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? You get that Cannes glamour during the day, then retreat to this peaceful pocket where you can actually hear yourself think. The pool area becomes this lovely spot in the late afternoon when the light hits just right, and there’s usually space to spread out even during busy periods. Parking can be a bit tight (it’s France, after all), but they’ve got it figured out better than most places in the area. What really sealed it for me was this moment on my last evening – I was sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine, watching the hills turn golden, and it hit me that this felt like the real Côte d’Azur experience, not the Instagram version. That 8.7 rating makes total sense when you experience the whole package.
